Thanks to Tonya for letting me do a bi-monthly guest feature for Budget & the Beach! This is a very nice honor and I hope to bring you some easy to follow smart spending tips and coupons to make your paycheck go a little further each month.
Speaking of smart spending, as much as I love receiving a colorful tie or a bright new pair of undies from one of my 3 kids on Father’s Day, some of the best gifts I have received cost very little money, and in many cases, nothing more than a little time spent. Here are 4 incredibly memorable gifts I have received that hopefully can give you some inspiration to make Dad’s day a great one this year.
1. Make Him a Movie
A very special Father’s Day gift I received several years ago was a DVD which had our family pictures from the previous year on it all set to music. My wife had it broken up into chapters which included one for each kid and one for each outing or vacation we took during the year. As a matter of fact, I liked it so much that I now create one for us every year. Download the free Movie Maker program from Microsoft and start making a movie for Dad right now. Believe me, coming from a Dad, he’ll really love it.
2. Plan an Outing
Perhaps the most memorable gift I have ever received was last Father’s Day when my wife and kids planned a 7 mile bike-ride and picnic lunch. Hitting the trails with the fresh-air in my face and watching all my kids ride with me (and actually get-along) is something I will never forget. The lunch of my favorite sandwich and chips was just icing on the cake. I urge you to plan an outing for Dad this year. Either an activity he already loves, or something new you think he would dig both have the potential to be a lifelong memory. Just make it happen.
3. Practical Gifts Rock!
Some of the best gifts I have received over the years are also the most practical and typically not very expensive. Stuff that I need to buy but just keep forgetting to do so. Things like the light bulb in the oven that hasn’t worked in 3 years, the new washer to stop the shower from dripping, and the long handled “thingee” with a magnet at the end so I can get the set of keys I dropped behind the 55 gallon fish tank. If my kids could just buy that stuff for me, so I can check-off a bunch of crap from my to-do list around the house, that would be totally epic. And believe me, when they do, it really is epic.
4. Make Him a Coupon Book
A few years ago my wife had the idea of having the kids create a coupon book for me. It was an awesome gift and still puts a smile on my face when I think about it. My youngest was 3 at the time and I still specifically remember her coupon reading “Good for Dog Poop” with a umm, lovely colored picture of a steaming pile on the lawn. Long story short, she was willing to clean up the dog poop from the lawn for 1 week. Other coupons included a free car wash, control of the remote, and dessert of your choice for 2 days. I remember thinking, wow, only 2 days?
